Prepare to shatter all your ideas of what you thought you could do with a lathe! Derek uses sweeping cuts on a lathe and multi-axis turning to sculpt forms of animals and human faces. Yes, his forms are entirely turned. You may have seen him recently demonstrating at the American Association of Woodturners National Symposium, or maybe on the cover of American Woodturner Magazine, among other places. He will begin the demo by asking the audience to suggest an animal and will proceed to create the form without plan or practice. His demo illuminates his process and discusses problem solving techniques and creative thinking. He will show coloring and finishing processes, and hopefully use the blowtorch as well!
